Not sure who is the spares officer at present, Ian but it would be from the club spares scheme. I was supplied some for a bike I was building a couple of years back but it was black so not the original material but presumably a modern equivalent - like brake linings.

Hi Rick

I would use the red stuff for the clutch stops - who would I speak to in club - to purchase

Sorry Ian, I thought you were using the club material. The originals on my 9A are a hard red stuff, like fibre washer material. Some Ferodo brake blocks for vee rim brakes were red so I'd guess it's the same as that. I doubt leather would have been used other than - like wood - by ingenious owners!

Hi Rick
Thanks for reply, you didn't mention the material which is used in the stop - I have read a leather insert.

I think on mine it was about 3/16" sticking out but obviously there is quite a bit of adjustment so the main thing is to see they are pressed into the holder far enough that they will not come out - ie they are well braced against the rubbing of the plate. To be honest I think they are a waste of time. All they ever did/do was prevent a crunch engaging first gear from rest, so if you free the clutch before kick starting you don't need them. In neutral the pressure plate is free spinning and they will arrest it if it's caught by oil drag but once you are in any gear, the clutch centre (and therefore pressure plate) rotates with the rear wheel; they are not going to stop the bike rolling so all they can do is wear down. I spent ages setting them up evenly on my 9A but with my '28 Model 9 I've just backed them right off and had no problems.

Hello
I have now ventured into the primary drive.

Having removed the two clutch stops, I have a question.

The clutch stops rub against the clutch plates to allow first gear to be selected easier.

The clutch stops are hollow (I assume to allow insert of a friction material to prevent metal to metal contact.
In my case one has a hard wood dowelling inserted and the other has none (fallen out and disappeared)

My question is what is the friction material inserted into the Clutch stops and how far does it protrude out of the stop.

Thanks in advance

Regards Ian
