Hi Steve,
This is an ancient topic now and I daresay the problem has been solved. I'm not familiar with these and all I can suggest is the lever on the gearbox is the wrong length, or the gate is wrong.

You should join the pre-war AJS and Matchless egroup, plenty of knowledge there.

Forgive the heresy, in the Sunbeam forum - but I'm having trouble with my AJS Big Port gearbox. We can have first and second or second and third, but however I adjust the length of the gear rod the luxury all three are unattainable - not very satisfactory.  Any further adjustment is, I'm afraid, beyond my meagre capability, so does anyone know anyone locally (South Staffs) who might be able to help.  I'm very willing to learn if  someone could guide me through the process.
