Hi Both, Thanks for the replies. I don't have anything that could heat the metal to that temperature noting my hand held blow touch isn't going to help much here !

I'll see if I can find any local engineering firms / garages that may be able to help. My main concerns are two fold, a) still being able to insert the rod through each footrest, and b) the 'adjustable' bit that locks the footrest to the engine cases still works.

Cheers, Gary.

Not completely sure what footrests you have on a 95 Joe, but they are probably the usual Sunbeam type in which case as  Russ says, scaffold pole or an old fork tube should straighten them. I hesitate because I once had a footrest break on a 1937 250 Sunbeam - and it didn't want to weld either, so I suspect later ones were not the usual material but earlier ones and most other British footrests are very ductile - when they bend,  you can straighten them without them breaking. Heat may  help but realistically it would need to be red hot to do much which isn't easy without oxygen (oxy propane or acetylene). I'd be shy of doing it on the bike because you'd be bearing on the primary case,  while on the right side the hollow part of the rest is much longer and as likely to  bend rather than the actual foot rest part - which is the usual reason the rod  won't go through the middle. To get that  right, and control exactly where it bends, you would be best off using gas. I'd maybe look out for a local garage (a proper repair place, not a 'main dealer') who has a strong bench with a vice and oxy acetylene and ask them to do it.

tools......a 4' length of scaffold tube and a blow torch.......leave them in place......heat the mounting connection and use scaffold tube as the leverage......it's the Allen Millyard technique

Both footrests on my 95L are bent to varying degrees, so I'm assuming the bike has been down on both sides at some point in the distant past. I was able to remove one footrest (the longer one) and the rod (with the shorter footrest still attached) after straightening the footrest rod whilst still on the bike.

At this point I took the parts to my local motorcycle shop who managed to remove the footrest that refused to come off the rod. He also managed to straighten the rod sufficiently for me to refit it to the bike. The problem I have is that I am now unable to refit either footrest to the rod. I'm sure I could force them to fit, but obviously I don't want to do this.

The bike shop did try and straighten the footrests but was concerned that the footrests would have ended up further damaged, noting its clear there is now a 'flat side' to the part of the short footrest that connects to the engine cases.

I do have some 11mm metal rod that I can put inside both footrests to support them noting I have also bought a 6 tonne press to try and bend the footrests straight myself, but like the bike shop, I am worried I may damage them more.

I do have pictures but are unable to attach them to the topic due to their high resolution and hence size.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
