Thanks for comments Rick.
I will make one, regarding your offer of dimensions, I will take direct from my quadrant.

Many thanks

Ian

Ah, ok - well you could probably make one or get one made. Given that it's only a lead to feed in the proper teeth I doubt it does much real work - as long as the ratchet is engaged before swinging it over, obviously. It would need to be decent steel rather than hard - I'd try EN24T. You'd need to turn the diameter where it fits into the quadrant and spring but the tooth itself could be shaped with a hacksaw and file. Given what it does I think it needs to be an 'easy fit' so I don't think it needs to be very accurate. Mine is apart at present so I can sort some rough dimensions if you want to give it a go.

The quadrant I have does have a slot and hole for a spring loaded tooth, but alas is missing.
I expect these are rarer then hens teeth.

Hi Ian, that probably makes sense. All the original quadrants I have seen have a spring loaded tooth to help engagement - but only on the kick side,  I guess the return should be easier because the gear is turning when the engines running. Looking at it the return tooth does seem to be bevelled slightly but I can't tell for sure if that's original or wear and tear.

Hi
I have a problem with the kick starter quadrant on first tooth with pinion not indexing correctly ie tip to tip seize.
Also the same scenario on the return of quadrant when it clears pinion, then on its return.

It did this on old pinion and new one. the quadrant has minimal wear. New kick starter shaft, new spring fitted.

I have done a search and read on this forum and others.

So it seems the norm is to reduce the size of the first quadrant tooth and maybe the last (to allow return of quadrant to its resting position).

Your opinions appreciated

Regards Ian
